Hi Suzanne! I am Mamen, a Spanish mother of a 1-year-old lovely baby-girl.
I found your blog at Spanglishbaby and I wanted to tell you that I love it.
I’m very interested in bilingualism and trilingualism too. I live in a bilingual community (Spanish and Catalan) and of course I want my daughter to become bilingual, which I think she will do without a doubt.
But I also want her to learn English and become trilingual. I consider myself sort of trilingual, because I speak Catalan and Spanish as my mother tongues, plus English, which I started learning when I was a little girl at school, and which I try to practice as much as I can.
My problem is that I don’t feel confident enough on my English to pass it on to my baby. It’s not my mother tongue, so my phonetics are not native ones, and I obviously make grammar or vocabulary mistakes. Nevertheless, I try to teach her some English through games, songs or watching some English cartoons.
I wish you loads of luck with your plans to have a trilingual daughter and congratulations for being a new mum!

Hi Mamen,
I know how you feel. Sometimes I feel the same way about my Spanish. Thanks for the comment. My husband and I visited Catalunya summer of ’09. We LOVED Barcelona and especially Girona.
Good luck in your trilingual journey friend! I wish you the best, too.

I’m in Austin, TX and I’m wondering if you can refer me to a spanish tutor. My sons are in the dual language (english/spanish) program in AISD and I need to get them some additional help in spanish. This is the first year for the program in AISD and the school can’t provide a benchmark of any kind to indicate whether my kids are learning anything in spanish or where they should be. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Shae
